about

Romantic Flute
The word Romantic evokes a wide variety of memories, dreams, emotions and ideals. It can conjure up scenes of beautiful countryside, classic ancient ruins, people walking hand in hand or a beautiful moonlit night. Romantic can also evoke your favourite melody, book or film. Above all it tells a story that is personal to each individual. Every story has an imaginative and emotional appeal that contains aspects of heroism, adventure, mystery and love. That is what I have attempted to create with this CD; a story without words that I can share with you, the most important element of any music making, the listener.

Anne played the flute with sweet clarity.
The Times

A joy to listen to. Clear and clean solos and bravura cadenzas... a delightful performance, with an experienced soloist.
Bridport Newspaper review, Mozart Concerto in D

Anne brought joy and calmness to the ward. An amazing performance.

ANNE ALLEN is an experienced and award-winning professional flautist who excels as both a soloist, ensemble and orchestral player.
Anne quickly became recognised as an exciting young flutist, graduating from Cambridge University and the Royal Northern College of Music with Distinction. She has played in many major UK venues and abroad in Europe, the Far East, Africa, Russia and South America. Anne has performed solo concerti with orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra and has also performed on Radio 2, Radio 3, Classic FM, BBC TV, Sky TV and various film soundtracks.
Anne enjoys the lighter side of music making, taking great pleasure in playing for shows and providing entertainment for a variety of occasions and events across the UK. Her clients have included members of the Royal Family, the British Olympic Committee in Singapore, David & Victoria Beckham and Sting.
Having spent a great deal of time recovering from a bone tumour, a highly valued side to Anne’s career is performing for Music In Hospitals, a charity whose mission is ‘to improve the quality of life for adults and children with all kinds of illness and disability though the joy and therapeutic benefits of professionally performed live music’.
Anne plays on a Louis Lot flute, built in Paris in 1871 by Louis Lot himself.

CHARLES MATTHEWS (piano accompaniment) studied at the Royal College of Music in London and was an organ scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has won numerous awards, most notably first prize in the 1999 Franz Liszt Organ Interpretation Competition in Budapest. Charles is organist of St Catherine’s Church, Chipping Campden and acts as piano accompanist and organ tutor at the Birmingham Conservatoire. As well as performing on the piano and organ Charles also composes and a collection of pieces for flute & piano was published in 2006 by Schott.
Anne and Charles first met in 2002 and have performed together regularly ever since; across the UK, abroad and at sea on cruise ships for Cunard and P&O!
